CASE STORY
Beerhead Caravan & Camping Park
When your business depends on dry weather how do you manage a 50 x increase in demand for water?
Overview
Beerhead Caravan & Camping Park have over 80 years’ experience of making wonderful holiday memories, situated next to the South West Coast Path, on the famous Jurassic coast overlooking Lyme Bay. In the height of summer the site can accommodate over 750 guests in 325+ lodges, caravans and pitches.
This was the issue that Beerhead Caravan Park had to deal with. The answer is to have you own water supply, with the flexibility to turn up and store water when you need it.
Challenges
Beerhead contracted Baker Associates to manage their project. The service included a full hydro geological assessment to confirm the potential capacity of water supply within the caravan park.
Hirons provided the drilling services, which was crucial to the success of the water supply. Drilling the well too deep could have resulted in saline water as the park was so close to the sea

SOLUTIONS
P J Hirons drilled the borehole to a depth of 150m. A steel casing was inserted through the chalk, flints and the weakly cemented Greensand to 120m with UPVC liner / screen installed to full depth. On completion a Pedrollo 3kw Pump was installed on a Falcon 2” rising Main at 125m depth with a potential pumping rate of 5 cubic metres per hour.
PJ Hirons used a Fraste FS300 rig mounted on a MAN 6×6 truck 500 h/p and with 18 tonne pull back, 14 tonne pull down on this project.
The drill has a dual speed rotary head with a rod manipulator system. It can deliver a maximum torque of 1800 daNm with a maximum drilling depth of up to 400 metres and drilling diameter of 600 mm. It is also fitted with an on board compressor, and both mud and foam pumps.
ROB BEERHEAD
‘PJ Hirons were onsite as promised, completed the project on time and within budget. A great team to work with.’

RESULTS
The drilling team where on site for 4 days and have provided the fresh water supply for the Beerhead Caravan and Parking Park.
