Improving the security of your water supply
Overview
Neighbours Vernon Webb and Ian Jenkins were previously on a private water supply shared by 8 households. This was very unreliable, so Vernon and Ian decided to change to a borehole exclusively for the 2 households.
Challenges
Working in the domestic environment often means bringing large, noisy equipment into narrow drives, small turning spaces and confined areas near people’s homes.

To complete all work within the project timescales, allowing other contractors to begin work promptly.

The drilling team needed to work in a small space but with careful planning were able to set up the rig in a convenient location near the houses.

Make the installation value for money- share the borehole between the two households and provide sufficient water pressure.
SOLUTIONS
PJ Hirons used a Fraste FS300 rig mounted on a MAN 6×6 truck 500 h/p and with 18 tonne pull back, 14 tonne pull down on this project.
The drill has a dual speed rotary head with a rod manipulator system. It can deliver a maximum torque of 1800 daNm with a maximum drilling depth of up to 400 metres and drilling diameter of 600 mm. It is also fitted with an on board compressor, and both mud and foam pumps. The borehole was lined with 125mm PVC and fitted with 2 x 100 pressure vessels, a Franklin motor and ZDS pump with a 240v power supply. Plasson fittings were used on the raising main.

RESULTS
PJ Hirons installed the earthing system on time, working as part of the complex solar farm installation. The earthing system passed the fall of potential test allowing Goldbeck Gmbh to hand over the project to the client and to the satisfaction of Western Power Distribution, the local distribution network operator.
